The Alaska State Medical Association surveys and accredits institutions and organizations to provide continuing medical education programs to physicians in Alaska. The association manages the Alaska Medical Political Action Committee, which encourages physicians to take part in government affairs. The Alaska State Medical Association also publishes a bimonthly newsletter, Heartbeat. The association manages a grievance committee that investigates, adjudicates and mediates complaints regarding the practice of medicine by physicians. In addition, its physician resource committee addresses Medicaid physician issues. The association publishes Alaska Medicine, which is a magazine that features scientific studies. The Alaska State Medical Association additionally offers membership opportunities.
