- Pediatric CareKids can’t vote, so they need a voice in Virginia’s General Assembly. PAA supports the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics so that our patients have a strong voice in Virginia’s policymaking process.
- Primary CareMary was born and raised in Manassas, Virginia. She completed a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from the University of Virginia. She went on to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee to complete an accelerated Master of Science in Nursing Program, specializing in Pediatric Primary Care. She is currently licensed as a Nurse Practitioner through the state of Virginia and board certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. She is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
- Sleep DisordersThroughout her education, Dr. He has enjoyed being a mentor in the community. She was a Big Sister through the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization and has also spent time volunteering in both elementary and high school classrooms. She knew she wanted to move back to her home community in Northern Virginia and was proud to finish her medical training at INOVA Fairfax Children's Hospital's pediatric residency. She has lectured on language and communication milestones, bilingualism, and sleep disorders of childhood. Her clinical interests include childhood development, allergies, asthma, and encouraging adolescents to take an active role in managing their own health.
- Family PracticeDr. Hopper was born and raised in Danbury, Connecticut, where he graduated from Danbury High School, captained the cross country and track teams, and played trumpet in the band. He earned degrees in Biblical Studies and Biology from Abilene Christian University in 1993, and graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1997. He completed an internship in Family Practice at the University of Southern California, and during that year decided that his calling was pediatrics. After completing his pediatric residency at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, he stayed on as Chief Resident, before returning to the Washington, DC area to join Pediatric Associates of Alexandria in 2001.
- Emergency CareWe are conveniently located in the INOVA HEALTHPLEX building on Walker Lane in Alexandria, Virginia. In the event that your child’s medical condition exceeds the treatment that PAA can provide, there is an Emergency/Urgent Care Unit on the first floor of our building.
- Labor and DeliverySydney was born and raised in Saratoga Springs, NY. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from James Madison University. Upon graduation she went on to work at Inova Fairfax Labor and Delivery as a bedside nurse for 4.5 years. She will always hold a special place in her heart for the families she cared for, however, this was where she discovered her true passion of taking care of newborns and the desire to care for the pediatric population as an advanced practice provider. She completed her MSN at Maryville University of St. Louis in 2021, with a specialty track as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Sydney is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
- GastroenterologyKelley is a native of Bloomfield, NJ. She received her Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech in 2007. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Nursing Practice from Columbia University. After graduation, Kelley moved to the DMV and spent 2 years in primary care before working at Children’s National Medical Center in the Department of Gastroenterology from 2012-2019, where she worked as the inpatient consult coordinator. Kelley is certified by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board and is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
- AutismBorn in Morgantown, WV, Dr. Jean He grew up in many states across the country from Rhode Island to Washington State, before spending most of her childhood in her hometown of Fairfax, VA. She attended Johns Hopkins University, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She received her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, where she also obtained her Master's in Biomedical Science with her thesis on Long-term Neurocognitive Outcomes from Radiation Treatment of Childhood Medulloblastoma, and Master's in Public Health with her thesis on an Outcome Evaluation of the Autism Behavioral Consultation Program.
- EpilepsyAlyssa grew up in Western New York where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing from The College at Brockport. After working in Rochester for about a year, Alyssa moved to Virginia and began working as a pediatric nurse at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. During her time spent at MGUH, Alyssa became a certified pediatric nurse and had additional training in pediatric hematology-oncology and epilepsy. She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from The George Washington University, is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner and is licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Virginia.
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)ADHD care and medical management for Dr. Shropshire’s existing patients may be transferred to another one of our providers who has experience and training in managing ADHD. Many of our providers have done extra training in the diagnosis and management of ADHD.

- Mental HealthDr. Kernan is a member of the pediatric staff at Inova Alexandria and Fairfax Hospitals. She has been Board Certified in Pediatrics since 1999, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is an associate professor of medicine at VCU medical school. She enjoys teaching medical students and residents in addition to caring for her patients at Pediatric Associates of Alexandria. Dr. Kernan has had a special interest in mental health since medical school. In May of 2016, after taking additional training through Inova and the REACH Institute, Dr. Kernan began doing anxiety and depression evaluations in the office.

- Sports MedicineOriginally from Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Shaykh first moved to Virginia to attend the University of Virginia where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine. He received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his residency training at New York Presbyterian Weill-Cornell in New York City. Dr. Shaykh is a board certified pediatrician by the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the medical staff at Inova Fairfax Hospital and Inova Alexandria Hospital. He also serves on the board for Faraja Primary School, a school for children with disabilities in Sanya Juu, Tanzania. Prior to joining Pediatric Associates of Alexandria, he worked at a local pediatric urgent care.
