The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department began as the Alameda Parks and Playgrounds Commission in 1908. It works with various sectors of the community to provide leisure services and opportunities to individuals. The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department maintains several recreational centers that are rented out for parties, receptions and special events. The department also maintains softball and baseball diamonds, as well as soccer fields. the Alameda Recreation and Parks Department also operates a swimming center that provides a variety of aquatic activities. The department organizes numerous events that include vacation camps, Earth Day, community events and tea parties, as well as hosts recreational activities for teenagers, adults and families.
